"Human Givens – A New Approach to Emotional Health and
Clear Thinking"
Joe Griffith and Ivan Tyrrell
Published by HG Publishing Ltd
At a recent seminar on "Brief Psychotherapeutic
Strategies", I discovered a refreshing approach to the
psychotherapeutic work that I do.
The "Human Givens" approach is based on the premise
that we all, as humans, have certain emotional needs,
which, if met, ensure our mental health and well being.
Some of these needs, for example are:
security, intimacy, attention, status…..there are more.
In short, when we suffer from depression, anxiety, eating
disorders, addiction etc., there will be unmet needs. When
these are uncovered and met, change happens very quickly
and healing takes place.
This therapy can work more quickly than many as it gets
to the heart of the matter and addresses core issues. The
Human Givens Approach is being used increasingly where
more traditional methods take a long time or are
ineffective.
This book is excellent reading for therapists, health
professionals and anyone interested in mental
health.

KEEPING CHILDBIRTH NORMAL AND
DYNAMIC
The Scottish Executive has appointed eleven Consultant
Midwives throughout Scotland to support this initiative.
The aim of KCND is to develop woman focussed maternity
care models and pathways to support normal pregnancy and
birth.
The promotion of normality is excellent news in a
climate where the incidence of surgical births is,
depending on where you live, around 23-25%. The caeasarean
operation was first performed as a "rescue" procedure,
when the baby or the mother were in grave danger. The
number of times it was needed was few and it saved lives.
Now, when maternal health and living conditions have
vastly improved, we have to question why more mothers and
babies are deemed to be "at risk" and requiring to be
rescued. I do hope we can look forward to this initiative
reducing the rate of surgical births and increasing the
number of babies born calmly, peacefully and normally
